In a study done by the American Moving and Storage Association, it found that out of 3 million movers, only 21 percent used professional moving services from companies like Excel Moving and Storage. While we highly recommend using a professional moving company as it can save money and minimize stress, people are free to do as they please. However, if you have opted to hire professional movers – we commend you and think you’ve made the right choice. To prepare for the moving company, below are some things that you can implement that will help everything go as smoothly as possible.

1. Getting Rid of Junk

This can come off as rather self-explanatory, but sometimes people can be so overwhelmed by a move, that they pack items that they end up throwing away the minute they get unpacked. When organizing your items for moving day, take a deep breath and a step back, and go over each item you are going to pack. Ask yourself questions, such as: When was the last time I used this? Do I really need this? Is this something that can easily be replaced? Not only is this practice good for moving, but repeating this process over the course of your life will keep your home tidy and clean.

2. Clearing Out Space

By clearing out high traffic areas in your house or apartment, you are minimizing the risk of anybody tripping over furniture and also reducing the chance of a mover, or yourself, hitting any furniture against the walls. Keeping the hallways and most-used rooms clear will allow for a seamless moving experience. If you know that a lot of furniture is going to be moved, it could be beneficial to place coverings on the edges of your furniture and on the floor. Another tip for clearing out space is to take everything off of the walls if you have not already done so.

3. Document Your Items

Whether you take pictures of your belongings or write down everything that’s being moved, it is important to document your personal items, therefore when you are unpacking you can make a checklist of your items. Documenting your belongings is also important in the case that they are broken, damaged, or are lost. While professional movers like those employed by Excel Moving & Storage almost never damage or break your items, in the rare instance that it does happen, this can help provide adequate documentation.

4. Remember the Essentials

Imagine that you are taking a multiple-day vacation and you are going to pack the essentials – toiletries, clothes, technology, etc. The same mindset goes into a move. Most of your items are going to be temporarily unavailable during the transition, therefore you are going to want to make sure that you have everything you need to make it through the move. Don’t forget items like your computer charger or undergarments – it’s the little things you don’t notice until they’re packed away!

5. Accommodate for any Children and Pets

Not that we don’t love our children and pets more than anything, but on moving day let’s face it, they can easily get in the way on moving day. We recommend leaving your kids or pets with a friend or a relative, or occupying them outside of the home while the movers are facilitating your move. We realize that not everyone can accommodate in this way, so if you can’t find a sitter for the kids and/or pets, the next best thing is to have them stay in a room within the house away from the movers. You won’t have to worry about stubbed toes, stepped-on tails, or movers with large boxes and furniture getting tangled up with your most precious cargo – your kids.
