After just executing a move, especially a long distance one, it’s incredibly important to settle it and get accustomed to your new location and home. However, it’s important to take care of certain imperative things as you get yourself settled. Read below for a checklist of things to do right after you move to make sure you can settle into your new home comfortably.
- Make Sure Your Utilities are In Order
When moving into a new home, it’s important to make sure your utilities are up and running (especially if there was a gap between the past tenants or owners moving out and you moving in). You may have to contact your power company, gas, and water company to get things turned back on again. If your utilities are already running, it is important to have your bills and services transferred to your name immediately.
- Unpack the Important Stuff First
Standing in a new home surrounded by boxes can be pretty intimidating. Make sure you have the essentials with you (toothbrush, toothpaste, chargers, towels, sheets, and an outfit change) packed separately in an overnight bag for easy access. From there, unpack your bedroom and essential kitchen and bathroom items first, and then move on to the less used stuff.
- Communicate with the Previous Owners or Landlord
Since you’re not familiar with your new home yet, it’s important to communicate with the old owners or with your landlord to find out things about your new location. Finding out the location of the fuse box, water shut off, gas shut off, water heater, or furnace is essential for your safety – you can never be too safe.
- Update Your Address
Make sure your address is updated and the post office is notified of your move, in order to forward or hold any mail at your closest branch. Make sure to notify and update your address with your job or company, any government agencies like the IRS, or your credit card companies to make sure your important correspondence is sent to your new address.
- Update Your License and Registrations
Make sure to keep your license, identification cards, and your car registration current and registered in your new location or new state. Also make sure to update your voter registration and transfer medical records to a new doctor’s office near you.
Most importantly, when settling into a new home – enjoy yourself and take your time settling in! Explore your new surroundings and adjust your furniture and home as much as you’d like. Make sure to get things updated, but don’t stress yourself out trying to do too many things at once. Especially if you’ve just completed a long-distance move, give yourself time to relax and get accustomed to your new home.
